Clos du Mont Olivet was created in 1932 by Séraphin Sabon after his marriage to Marie, daughter of Romain Jausset, who owned this plot in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, among other vineyards. Séraphin Sabon had three sons, Joseph, Roger, and Noël, who worked together for a few years and then divided the estate into three. It was the eldest, Joseph, who took over the management of Domaine du Clos Mont-Olivet.
Today, the 4th generation (Céline, David, and Thierry) is at the helm of this superb 20.5-hectare estate. Grenache is the predominant grape variety in the blend, supplemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and small amounts of other grape varieties (Counoise, Vaccarèse, Muscardin, Picpoul Noir, and Terret Noir).
The vines are treated without insecticides, and the proportions of each plot and grape variety in the wines produced vary from year to year, as do the aging times and containers. The wood footprint is always minimal (barrels aged several years).
Clos Mont Olivet therefore offers a distillation of what makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape great: plots ideally located in the most beautiful areas of the appellation. These wines have sensational aging potential and a truly inimitable, single-plot cuvée.
