The origins of Krug champagne lie in Mainz, Germany. It was there, at the beginning of the 19th century, that the brand's founder, Jean-Joseph Krug, was born. Like many Germans at the time, he settled in Reims, in the Champagne region, where he established his own house in 1843. He became a naturalized German citizen in 1848. Very quickly, Krug wines crossed borders, particularly the "Private Cuvée," which enjoyed resounding success in England. The First World War (1914-1918) did not spare Champagne, and like all the major houses, Krug was affected, but continued production. Its cellars even served as a refuge for the people of Reims during the German bombings. It was Paul Krug who steered the champagne house in a radical new direction by deciding to purchase its own vineyards. Between 1970 and 1972, he acquired more than 15 hectares of vineyards, including the renowned Clos du Mesnil. Since then, Krug has passed successively through the hands of the Rémy-Cointreau group and LVMH, its current owner. A descendant of Jean-Joseph Krug, Olivier, currently works there.
Krug continues to embody Champagne excellence, producing only prestige cuvées, starting with the Grande Cuvée, a blended Champagne that takes us to the very top. Year after year, this wine retains its unique character. Profound and complex, it benefits from a significant proportion of reserve wines, a strong influence of autolysis, and meticulous attention to dosage and disgorgement dates. Each edition is numbered, and the code on the back label provides all the details of its expert blend. The same emotion was felt with the vintage wines and the two magnificent Clos du Mesnil and d’Ambonnay, which express their identity with precision. While the team has changed recently, Julie Cavil, cellar master since 2020, continues to skillfully uphold the Krug style. Here, names may change, but the objective remains the same: never overlook a detail in order to continue producing sumptuous champagnes. The range tasted this year confirms the exceptional level of this outstanding house.
