The Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, in Chambolle-Musigny, has not always enjoyed its current reputation. Established by Frédéric Mugnier, a liqueur maker from Dijon, in 1863, the Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier initially sold its wines under the simple label "Château Chambolle-Musigny." In 1902, after purchasing Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the estate encompassed more than twenty hectares of vines. However, struggling in the immediate post-war period, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, great-grandson of Frédéric Mugnier, sold the liqueur factory in 1950, at the same time as he leased the vineyard. He eventually took over partial operation in 1978. Now under the control of his son Frédéric, Domaine Jacques Frédéric Mugnier, whose wines have earned a solid reputation, has been able to count on the return of the Clos de la Maréchale vineyard.
The estate underwent a radical change in 2004, expanding from 4 to 14 hectares with the reintegration of Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-Saint-Georges, which had been leased for 53 years, and on which a limited production of white wines was established. This monopoly complements the other vineyards located on the best terroirs of Chambolle-Musigny: Musigny, in the heart of Grand-Musigny, Bonnes-Mares, Les Amoureuses, and Les Fuées. Frédéric Mugnier prioritizes finesse above all to express the terroir without any embellishment, with a consistency worthy of praise and a precision that has logically established him over two decades among the major producers of Burgundy. Musigny is kept aging in bottles in the cellars of the estate, until it has reached a sufficient evolution to merit its release on the market.
