The presence of a vineyard on the lands of the current Château Clinet dates back to the early 17th century, when the estate belonged to the Gombault family. From the end of the 18th century, the property was entirely devoted to wine production: published in 1785, the Belleyme map – named after the geographer entrusted with the mapping of Guyenne – shows an estate entirely covered in vines. In 1825, Château Clinet changed hands for the first time, falling into the hands of the Arnaud family, owners of the not-yet-famous Petrus. After multiple changes of ownership, Château Clinet was taken over in 1908 by the Audy family, who spared no effort to raise the quality of their wine. The 1980s were a particularly prosperous period for this Pomerol vintage: under the direction of Jean-Michel Arcaute, Georges Audy's son-in-law, bold cultivation practices for the time (green harvesting and overripe grapes) were introduced with resounding success, earning Château Clinet's wine numerous rave reviews.
The Laborde family, owners of Château Clinet since 1999, produces a Pomerol of great fullness, dense, colorful, and always charming, but which has become more elegant in recent years, thus becoming more in keeping with the times after a period of somewhat excessive "modernity." The vintage boasts a superb terroir, in the heart of the high Pomerol plateau, on clay-gravel soils that give the wine power and intensity, as well as state-of-the-art winemaking equipment.
