Louis Roederer inherited a Champagne house in 1833, a visionary and entrepreneur, he decided to enrich his vineyard to control all stages of wine production. He acts against the customs of the time. Indeed, at this time, it is more common to buy grapes from winegrowers, but he prefers to acquire plots methodically by deciphering their character and their potential. His successor, Louis Roederer II, is driven by the same patient vision of champagne, the same heritage concept of the estate, the same instinctive audacity. The reputation of Roederer champagnes soon exceeded the borders of France. From the beginning, we found this nectar on American and English tables, and even that of the Russian Tsar. It turns out that Alexander II was particularly fond of this sparkling wine and asked Louis Roederer II to send him his best champagne every year. Louis Roederer seized this chance to create a prestigious cuvée, its purity and elegance inspiring its name: Cristal.
During the 1920s, a new heir to the house, Léon Olry Roederer, wanted to develop a balanced vintage with consistent quality from a blend of several vintages. He then decided to create the “Brut Premier” vintage which would spearhead the rebirth of the Louis Roederer house. After his death in 1933, his wife Camille managed the house.
In 1975, Jean-Claude Rouzaud, his grandson, then took the reins. Oenologist and agricultural engineer, he therefore has the scientific knowledge to perpetuate the tradition of excellence both in the vineyards and in the cellar.
Maison Louis Roederer is today in the hands of his son, Frédéric Rouzaud. With the same patience, the same demanding spirit and unwavering loyalty to its creative vocation, Maison Louis Roederer today ships three million bottles around the world.
