"Tasted at the 1947 dinner at The Square, London. One of Barsac's legendary wines of the vintage, Climens '47 remains an irresistible sweet wine that has held up extraordinarily well for six decades. Here it has a powerful bouquet of marmalade and fragrant tangerine that suggests this Climens was born laden with botrytis. The palate is blessed with the fullness and creaminess synonymous with the vintage with a richly textured, honey and quince finish."

Details

Château Climens is a 30 ha wine estate located in Barsac in Gironde. In AOC Barsac, it is classified 1er Cru Classé in the official classification of Bordeaux wines of 1855. The Climens vineyard, with an area of 30 hectares in one piece, is on soil composed of clayey red sand on a limestone base. The grape varieties are 100% Sémillon (which constitutes one of the rare single-variety vineyards in the region). Climens only produces a sweet white wine. The estate produces a second wine ‘Cyprès de Climens’ or Les Cyprès de Climens in memory of a curious tradition: when the boats paid the custom (right of passage) on the Ciron, they were given a branch of blue cypress to attest to payment.
