Founded in the 18th century, Château Rieussec was then inhabited and managed by the monks of the Carmelites of Langon. Confiscated during the French Revolution then sold as a “National Property”, the property changed hands in 1855, a major date in its history as that of the recognition of its terroir as a 1er cru Classé of Sauternes.
The Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Château Lafite) acquired Château Rieussec in 1984. Increased rigor in vinification, construction of a new cellar in 1989, refined blending, conversion to more environmentally friendly agriculture... all actions reflecting the perpetual search for excellence and quality advocated for several generations by the Rothschild family.
Overseeing a terroir of 85 hectares planted on sandy-clayey gravel soils, Château Rieussec is recognized for the quality of its fresh and powerful sweet wines, magnifying the expression of Sémillon, the estate's emblematic grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon and Muscadelle.
