Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a 91-hectare estate (76 hectares of which are in production) established in 1981 by Marquis Lodovico Antinori, and planted with typical Bordeaux grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot). In 2002, it was sold to the Californian group Robert Mondavi Winery, and then in June of the same year, 50% was sold to the Marchesi di Frescobaldi, a Tuscan winemaking family. Since 2005, the Marchesi di Frescobaldi have been the sole owners. In a short time, this exceptionally high-quality estate has risen to become one of the very best. The vines are planted along the Tuscan coast and give rise to some of the finest wines (Masseto, Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia – the second wine of Ornellaia), and Le Volte. Everything is done here to produce the world's greatest wines: meticulous work in the vineyard, hand-harvesting in crates, and winemaking overseen by leading oenologists. Ornellaia (DOC Superiore) is aged for 18 months in oak barrels. The Bolgheri terroir has yielded a refined and elegant red; Ornellaia is a complex wine, both smooth and structured.
