"The 2005 Calon Segur is on par with the wonderful 2000. The only real difference is that it requires more time in bottle. It has a captivating nose: blackberry and boysenberry coming at you at full skin; dried blood and bacon grease developing as secondary flavors just behind. There is a fine delineation here - an underlying minerality sure to surface with time. The palate is very intense and disarmingly youthful, almost ferrous on the entry with layers of ripe black fruits which follow into an earthy finish (with a light Marmite flavor on the aftertaste!). It's a fabulous Calon Ségur." 94/100 Robert Parker (October 2016)

Château Calon Ségur has its roots in the Middle Ages. As early as 1147, archives mention the existence of this property then owned by Monseigneur de Calon, an influential bishop. In the 18th century, the estate became the property of Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, nicknamed the “Prince of Vines”. The latter, who also owned the prestigious châteaux Lafite and Latour, declared: “I make my wine in Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon. » This quote will inspire the current label of Calon Ségur bottles, decorated with an emblematic heart, symbol of the marquis' unwavering attachment to this land.

Classified Third Growth in the famous classification of 1855, the estate spans the centuries under the management of the Gasqueton family, until 2012, when it was acquired by the Suravenir insurance group, a subsidiary of Crédit Mutuel Arkéa. Since this acquisition, the estate has benefited from major investments, notably under the leadership of Vincent Millet, technical director, who is working to modernize the infrastructure while preserving the unique character of Calon Ségur wines.

What truly distinguishes Château Calon Ségur is the exceptional nature of its terroir located on the left bank. Although its altitude does not exceed 13 meters, the area benefits from a marked relief and slopes favoring optimal drainage of rainwater. The soils are made up of a thick layer of Quaternary gravels, deposited by the river over time, resting on a clayey subsoil. This combination of gravel and clay, unique in the region, contributes to the structure and finesse of the wines produced here.

The 55-hectare vineyard, in one piece and entirely enclosed by a wall, is planted with the four classic Médoc grape varieties: 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon, the king grape variety of the appellation, particularly stands out in the blend, with a replanting program which will bring it to 70% by 2032.
