The Pol Roger house was founded in 1849 in Aÿ, but moved to Épernay two years later. Its eponymous founder died in 1899, having notably made his champagne a favorite among the English. During the Second World War, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill became friends with Odette Pol Roger and her family. This is why the house dedicated a cuvée to him in 1975 on the 10th anniversary of his death. Today, the Sir Winston Churchill cuvée remains the flagship of the Pol Roger Champagne house. This house, renowned for the quality and consistency of its champagnes, is also one of the few to have remained independent, as it is still run by descendants of the original family.
Founded in 1849, Pol Roger is a true Champagne icon, emblematic of precision, consistency, and generosity. The house relies on a vast vineyard, nearly half of which is owned, spread primarily across the slopes of Épernay, the Côte des Blancs, as well as Mareuil and Ambonnay. The three Champagne grape varieties are cultivated there and are represented in equal proportions in external supplies. Malolactic fermentation is systematically carried out, contributing to the house style: round, charming Champagnes with an enveloping texture. A rare practice at this scale, Pol Roger continues to riddle its entire production, nearly 2 million bottles annually, by hand in its impressive 7.5-kilometer-long cellars beneath Épernay. The identity of the cuvées is based on the aging period of the reserve wines and the rigorous selection of crus, giving each wine a unique signature.
