The Altenberg is the very symbol of Jean-Michel Deiss's work and convictions on the erasure of grape varieties in favor of the terroir. The terroir of the Altenberg de Bergheim is very specific: the soil is notably composed of Jurassic limestone and Lias marl, elements rich in fossils giving a poor clay-limestone soil, ferruginous and limestone rock. This type of soil requires the vine to dig its roots deep to draw its nutrients. In addition, its micro-climate, influenced by the full southern exposure, is very hot and dry, giving very good ripeness of the grapes and sometimes noble rot. All the traditional Alsatian grape varieties are planted on this plot.

Details

Domaine Marcel Deiss is a family winegrowers established since 1744 in Bergheim, Alsace. Led by the talented Jean-Michel Deiss, Domaine Marcel Deiss cultivates 27 hectares of vines divided into 220 highly diverse plots in the Alsace and Alsace Grand Cru appellations.

The Marcel Deiss vineyard is managed biodynamically, using traditional Alsatian winemaking techniques (co-planting, plowing, digging, composting, grassing), without weeding or chemical fertilizers. The emphasis is placed above all on the expression of the terroir, with the estate cultivating no fewer than 220 plots, all co-planted. The terroir-driven wines of Domaine Marcel Deiss naturally bear the hallmarks of these standards: these are wines that signal a return to the true, centuries-old Alsatian tradition, a return to the golden age.
