The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, in the far south of Alsace, is based on volcanic ash and graywacke, producing wines with smoky minerality and great verticality. In the heart of this mountain, Clos Saint Urbain, a monopoly of the Zind-Humbrechet estate since 1977, has become a benchmark.

Details

A tireless ambassador for his wines and the region, Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold a Master of Wine degree, has long understood the importance of working in the vineyard. He converted the Zind-Humbrecht estate to biodynamics in 1999, and is one of its best ambassadors, also serving as president of the Biodyvin label. This type of cultivation has allowed him to overcome botrytis and reduce alcohol levels.

The wines have evolved over the years and now assert a resolutely dry style, with large barrels aging them several meters underground. Like all great Alsace wines, they reach their full potential after a few years or decades of aging. The Clos Windsbuhl is a must-try, and the Rangen de Thann stands out with age.
