Traces of the Lagrange estate can be found from the very beginning of human history. In Gallo-Roman times it was known as “La Villa Rustica”, then in the Middle Ages “La Grangia”, which would eventually become the “Lagrange” we know today. However, the various owners can only be traced back to 1631. The 18th century corresponds to the golden age of the château, acquired by the Branne family, then owners of Mouton, and who would contribute to its influence. In 1820, the Tuscan Tower was then built by Visconti, which would become the emblem of Château Lagrange. In 1855, the estate obtained the title of 3rd Grand Cru Classé, followed by a whole period of improvement and modernization of the vineyard. The estate was expanded, reaching 280 hectares, including 120 of vines. Since 1983, Château Lagrange has been owned by the Japanese group Suntory, which then undertook a phase of investment to elevate Château Lagrange to an unprecedented level of excellence. Furthermore, the evolution of production methods has the advantage of reducing the estate's environmental impact. This is perfectly in line with the philosophy of respecting the property's history while promoting the exceptional terroir, which offers a unique winemaking experience.
Benefiting from an exceptional terroir in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, Château Lagrange boasts a 118-hectare vineyard planted in a single plot. Located at an altitude of 24 meters, the center of the estate corresponds to the highest point of the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate, located on two gravelly hillocks facing north-south, as well as a clay-limestone soil and sandy and sandy-gravel colluvium, offers a unique terroir for the production of an exceptional wine. A worthy Médoc estate, Cabernet Sauvignon covers 67% of the Château Lagrange estate. Indeed, this elitist grape variety planted on deep gravelly soils as is the case here, structures the wines in depth, providing optimal aging potential. The rest of the vineyard is covered 28% by Merlot, and 5% by Petit Verdot. There are also 7.5 hectares of white, composed of 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Sauvignon Gris, and 20% Sémillon.
