Details

Located on the outskirts of Bordeaux, Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest wine estates in the region since the first harvest took place in 1252. Château Pape Clément owes its name to Pope Clément V. Born into a distinguished family in Gironde in 1264, Bertrand de Got, also known as Bertrand de Goth, received a gift of a wine estate planted with vines. in Pessac in 1299, when he had just been named archbishop of Bordeaux. Bertrand de Got will be enthroned Pope in Perugia, Italy, in 1305, under the influence of his friend, the King of France, Philippe IV Le Bel, thus becoming Pope Clement V. Pope Clement V will manage his vineyard with passion before donating it to the Archbishop of Bordeaux. We then spoke of the “Vines of Pope Clement”. After the French Revolution, in 1789, Château Pape Clément passed through the hands of different owners before being acquired by Paul Montagne in 1939.

In 1983, Bernard Magrez, the tireless builder and composer of rare wines bought the property. Bernard Magrez, who today owns 4 Grands Crus Classés in Bordeaux, will use all his energy and determination to raise Château Pape Clément to the rank of the elite of Bordeaux grands crus. In 2009, Château Pape Clément was notably rewarded by obtaining a score of 100/100 from the American critic Robert Parker.

Enjoying an exceptional terroir, in Pessac, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the Château Pape Clément vineyard extends over an area of 63 hectares of vines planted on gravelly-sandy, clay-limestone soils with a limestone subsoil rich in iron.

Recognized for its very great red and white wines from Graves, Château Pape Clément constitutes an essential reference of the great classified growths of Bordeaux for wine lovers from all over the world.
