"Fully ripe Bordeaux. Solid nose with a predominance of leather and graphite but dark berries still present. Earthy and rustic. Similar flavor with some tobacco and sweet floral notes and a bit of mint. Secondary and tertiary flavors are strongest, but berry flavors persist. Very soft, perfectly integrated tannins."

Details

This property resulted from the division, in 1850, of the original Château Pichon Longueville, when the owner established the inheritance of his children: his son took the helm of the current Pichon Longueville Baron, while his daughter Virginie, wife of the Count of Lalande, received the other part of the property, hence the ending: "Countess of Lalande". A woman of authority, passionate about wine, Virginie is responsible for the growth and then the consecration of the estate. The latter remained within the founding family until 1925, when it was bought by Edouard and Louis Miailhe.
From 1978 to 2007, it was another great lady who held the reins: May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, the daughter of Edouard Miailhe. Grand Chancellor of the Bordeaux Wine Academy, she is nicknamed “the General”, given the military background of her husband. The feminine imprint left by the countess a century earlier could not find a better echo. Moreover, the passionate journey demonstrated by Pichon Lalande is far from being foreign to the tenderness and affection that enthusiasts have always had for the estate's wines. The property was bought in 2007 by the Rouzaud family, owner, among others, of the Roederer Champagne house.

Of the property's 75 hectares of vines, 11 are located in the town of Saint-Julien, producing wines of an elegance uncommon in Pauillac. In addition to a majority proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, a guarantee of longevity, the grape varieties offer an important place to Merlot, promising the wine more suppleness, particularly when young. The great wine of Pichon Comtesse therefore wonderfully combines the concentration of a Pauillac, and tannins of great distinction. Its exceptional terroir overlooking the Gironde allows it to better withstand harsh winters and hot summers. In the closed circle of the greatest Bordeaux. To be enjoyed after 10 to 30 years of aging.
