In 1689, Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan, owner of the Latour and Margaux estates, purchased the vineyards. A passionate and renowned wine merchant, he created the Enclos Rauzan. This acquisition would later become part of his daughter Thérèse's dowry. In 1694, she married Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville. They then built the Pichon Longueville estate. A large family estate, it enjoyed a brilliant reputation. It was later passed on to the Baron's descendants.
With their share of the estate, his three daughters created Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. His son, Baron Raoul, built the château and founded Pichon Longueville Baron. His wine was then officially classified as a 2nd Grand Cru of the Médoc. In 1987, the AXA insurance company purchased the château. Today, Christian Seely, the group's general manager, runs the estate. He is assisted technically by Daniel Llose and Jean-René Matignon. They are assisted by Alexandra Lebossé, Cellar Master, and Joël Dupuy, Head of Vineyards.
The grand vin of Pichon Longueville Baron has established itself in just a few years as one of the finest Pauillac vintages. Full-bodied and concentrated, it boasts a unique tannin structure that makes it absolutely delicious. Indeed, like the greatest wines of the appellation, it marvelously combines opposites: power and finesse. This is a wine to be enjoyed after 10 to 30 years of aging. Prices have remained very reasonable compared to premier crus, making it an essential reference for any lover of great Bordeaux.
