Details

It was in 1778 that Etienne-Théodore Dumoulin bought a plot of the Calon estate from Alexandre de Ségur, perfectly located, overlooking the Gironde. The area is then covered with heather which is covered with pink flowers in spring. Hence the name Montrose. His son Etienne created the vineyard, planted the vines, built the Château Montrose residence in 1825 and gradually expanded the estate. Success was not long in coming: during the 1855 classification, the wine was awarded 2nd Cru Classé du Médoc. The estate then had several owners before being acquired in 1896 by Louis Charmolüe, who bought it from his father-in-law Jean Hostein (who then owned Cos d'Estournel). The family remained in charge throughout the 20th century, represented until 2006 by Jean-Louis Charmolüe. A new page then turns with the purchase, by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, of this vintage which became legendary with the 1990 vintage.
