Formerly Château Gorce, named after its 18th-century owners, Château Brane-Cantenac produces a wine in the Margaux appellation that has long been renowned for its quality. But it was with the arrival of Baron Hector de Brane, former owner of Brane-Mouton (later Mouton-Rothschild), and his son Jacques-Maxime, that Château Brane-Cantenac truly took on a new dimension. An excellent winemaker, Jacques-Maxime de Brane gave the estate's wine its reputation, as well as its name.
Becoming Château Brane-Cantenac, it was sold in 1866 to the Roy family, who managed it until after the First World War. In the 1920s, Château Brane-Cantenac was owned by Léonce Récapet. Passed on to his son-in-law, François Lurton, the estate remains in the Lurton family to this day.
Château Brane Cantenac, a second classified growth, is now managed by Henri Lurton. It boasts both a beautiful terroir and modern infrastructure. It is now one of the finest wines in the appellation, cultivating a style that skillfully blends the beautiful finesse expected of Margaux wines with great depth and definition.
