William Harlan purchased land in the 1980s in the hills above the Oakville district in Napa Valley. Harlan harvested his first crop in 1987, but the result was disappointing compared to his ambition of producing a world-class wine. He waited until 1990 to market his wine for the first time.
Harlan Estate quickly became one of California's finest wineries. Oakville is located in the heart of Napa Valley and boasts soils perfectly suited to Bordeaux grape varieties. This terroir benefits from cool evenings and morning mists from the Pacific Ocean. The gravelly soil enjoys excellent drainage.
Today, the estate covers more than 100 hectares, 17 of which are dedicated to producing the estate's finest wines. The grape varieties used are typical of Bordeaux, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.
